Research Seminar: Shrimp Disease and Technological Approach to Prevent the Disease Outbreak

[Friday, February 14, 2025] – The seminar entitled “Shrimp Disease and Technological Approach to Prevent the Disease Outbreak” organized by the Digital Innovation Study Center (DIGITS) Faculty of Economics and Business, Padjadjaran University on February 14, 2025 at the Off-Campus Study Program (PSDKU) Unpad Pangandaran Campus was a success with high enthusiasm from the participants. This event is a series of collaborative research grant activities funded by the Australian Government through KONEKSI 2024 for DIGITS FEB Unpad in order to develop the Disease Reporting and Monitoring System (DRMS), an open collaborative platform that allows shrimp farmers and stakeholders to share data in real-time, report, and monitor potential diseases in the shrimp pond environment.

This seminar aims to increase understanding of various diseases that attack shrimp and technology-based solutions in preventing the spread of shrimp disease outbreaks. This event was held in a hybrid manner by presenting expert speakers in their fields, namely Dr. Sandeep M. Sesadrinath from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Australia who presented material on Action Research Design and Citizen Scientist and Alexander M.A. Khan, Ph.D from Padjadjaran University who presented material on various problems in the field of shrimp cultivation that are challenges for sustainability and development of DRMS as one of the mitigation strategies for the spread of shrimp diseases in Indonesia.

This seminar was attended by more than 100 participants from various backgrounds in a hybrid manner, including participants from central and regional government staff, cultivation consultants, practitioners, academics and of course students. In addition to the material presentation session, the event was also filled with a question and answer session and discussion so that interactive dialogue between participants and speakers became a means of exchanging effective and constructive experiences.

“This activity was carried out in a hybrid manner. We are very pleased that the event was fully attended by participants both on the Pangandaran campus and those who attended online. We really hope that the material presented both in terms of understanding the challenges in handling shrimp diseases and also the Action Design Research approach can provide inspiration in the implementation of research and application of the profession.” said Prof. Hamzah Ritchi, head of the DRMS research team, recipient of the 2024 KONEKSI grant and head of DIGITS FEB Unpad.

“The DRMS Project implemented by DIGITS FEB Universitas Padjadjaran is one of the real-world learning platforms for PSDKU UNPAD Pangandaran’s students in interacting with the international researchers’ community. Thank you for inviting PSDKU UNPAD Pangandaran to be involved in this invaluable academics experience.” said Alexander M.A. Khan, Ph.D as a member of the DRMS research team and Director of PSDKU Unpad Pangandaran.
With the success of this seminar, DIGITS FEB Unpad hopes to continue to present other educational events that are beneficial to the community.
