Unpad Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Najwa Amalia from FEB Unpad Helps MANIES Win 4 International Awards in the Philippines

A team of students from Padjadjaran University (Unpad) in Bandung has once again achieved impressive international success with their innovative blood sugar detection device, MANIES (Measurement Analysis NIR-Spectroscopy). This device allows users to monitor blood sugar without a syringe, simply by placing the tip of their right or left index finger on the sensor, and obtaining results in less than five seconds.

In this competition, MANIES again achieved international recognition, winning four awards: the ICE on I Award, the Murata Choice Award, the People’s Choice Award, and a Recognition Certificate from the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DOST).

In 2024, the Unpad student team also won five awards at World Invent Singapore, including the overall championship, a gold medal, and the Best Innovation Award. This success paved the way for an official invitation from the Philippine government through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for the MANIES Team to participate in the Philippines’ International Exposition of Technologies (PHILIPPINExT), held in Manila on July 14–17, 2025.

MANIES was developed using Near Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy technology, which can read wavelengths in body tissue to detect blood sugar levels. This prototype has been tested in two hospitals, including Unpad Hospital, involving 120 respondents. The test results demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 93%, demonstrating MANIES’ potential as an accurate, practical, and environmentally friendly medical instrument by reducing single-use medical waste.

The MANIES development team consists of students from various faculties and disciplines, including Rizky Ramadhan Sayyid Zenyda (Faculty of Medicine), Najwa Amalia Mansoor (FEB – Management), Yeni Setiyowati (Vocational School – Public Financial Administration), Muhammad Arrasyid Firdaus Riyadi (FMIPA – Statistics), and Muhammad Riza Vikar Akbar Alhayat (Faculty of Medicine).

The presence of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business on this team strengthens the downstreaming and sustainability strategy for innovation, ensuring that the resulting work is not only technologically superior but also has significant potential for public benefit. Team leader Rizky Ramadhan Sayyid Zenyda stated that the downstreaming of MANIES is a primary goal after receiving numerous awards.

MANIES’s series of achievements inspires the younger generation to continue innovating through cross-disciplinary collaboration and also encourages the development of other socially and economically sustainable innovations.

Stay motivated and continue to inspire Najwa and the team!
